Travel by rail

You can travel to York from London in less than two hours with services from both LNER and Grand Central, on the East Coast Main Line from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh. There are direct services from Birmingham and the South West. TransPennine Express runs direct train services from Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle and there is also a direct service between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport.

York train station to University of York (Campus West)

Bus

Regular bus services (U1 and U2) operate from York train station to the University of York Campus West. For more information, see the University's Public Transport webpages. Bus routes and tickets can be planned from the First York app.

Cycling and walking

It’s just a 15-minute bike ride or 30-minute walk from the city centre to Campus West. There are several off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes offering safe access into and around York. Find out more about the cycling routes. 

Taxi

Taxis must be either pre-booked, or from an official taxi rank. There is a taxi rank just outside the train station that you can use, or you can book one via phone or app. Please note that Uber are not licensed within the City of York.

Travel by air

There are three main airports that are commonly used, Manchester, London Heathrow and Leeds Bradford. Manchester has easy onward travel with an integrated train station and services that connect directly to York, but Heathrow has many more services from all over the world. Leeds Bradford is a much smaller airport, but if there is a service connecting your origin then it is very convenient.

Manchester Airport

Trains to York run frequently from Manchester airport rail station; journey time of approximately one hour and 50 minutes. The direct train operates once every hour.

London Heathrow Airport

From Heathrow Airport, travel to King's Cross St. Pancras station to get a direct train to York railway station. Trains from London King’s Cross to York depart every 30 minutes and take approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Find out how to get from Heathrow to central London.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Use the Flyer A1 bus service from Leeds Bradford Airport to get to Leeds bus station or Leeds train station. From Leeds train station, there are regular trains to York which take approximately 30 minutes.
