Frequently asked questions

Applications require the achievement, or expected achievement, of at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant area of biological, chemical or physical science, or mathematics. A Masters degree is not necessary. We are looking for a strong academic record combined with suitability for independent research. 

The programme is fully funded with the annual UKRI stipend, plus research/training grant and tuition fees. Core Plant BioDesign training events are provided free of cost (with additional financial support available where needed). Each studentship provides ~£17,000 as a research and training support grant. This is used, in discussion with supervisory team, to fund reseach costs as well as provide funds for individual training. 

Projects will be advertised in October for starting the following year. The projects will be advertised on this website in the Projects section, and on findaphd.com, host institution websites and through organisations promoting wider access to postgraduate research. 

There is no separate application process for CASE projects. Individual projects will indicate whether they are collaborative with an industry partner so you can take this into consideration when deciding which projects to apply for. You can apply for up to 2 projects and none, one or both of these can be CASE. 

Each candidate can apply for up to to 2 projects, these can be in different institutions.
